Some times some aspects of the experience of testing a 3D printer gets edited out to tell the story you want to. And the story I wanted to tell was “rough but it works”. However, there was also the “not for noobs” angle I could have taken. As seen on twitter, the unboxing instructions were incomplete, and if this was someone’s first 3D printer, they’d be rather frustrating. Once again, cable management seems to be an afterthought. Of course it was no trouble for me, but I ain’t no noob.
But, this isn’t priced to be someone’s first 3d printer. It’s very much poised to be the 3D printer that you upgrade to. However, they also have that clunky and confusing slicer that you really need to use to get the most out of this machine, which suffers from the “not what I’m used to” problem. And maybe this combination of “nothing really wrong with it” and “nothing really to get excited about” is why this video came out kinda “meh”.
I’m afraid my next review isn’t going to be much better. I need to come up with a narrative that’s interesting to watch for a 3D printer that’s thoroughly uninteresting.
Then there was building 2ni Sparks. Not so much drama about that, but I have been doing a lot more with electronics lately. My background is even more blinky than ever before! And just wait till you see my next big project.
But then there was the super drama when I started editing the video. I really don’t know what the problem was, but HitFilm was just not having it, crashing every time I tried to do a playback. So, I’ve decided to abandon HitFilm and commit myself to DaVinci Resolve. But, learning a new workflow has it’s downsides. For one, I’m back to basic edits only. I wasn’t even able to figure out how to zoom or slow pan a static image at first. I got that in the end, but text overlays are still something I’ll have to experiment with. Which is a shame. I was doing some cool stuff with text in HitFilm in this video before it decided to become less stable than a teenager.
I like Davinci Resolve so far, and going forward I may lean harder into it. I might even get the fancy control deck for it. Who knows.
