The Simplify3D folks let me have an advanced copy of their 4.0 version and and NDA that has had me biting my tongue. But now the cat is out of the bag and I can share with you the cool things they’ve done.
Now, Simplify3D 4.0 isn’t perfect, and the one bit of warning I have to tell you about.
First of all, after installing, in the menus hit Help-> Reset all Settings. A lot of the new settings don’t carry over from old processes and will cause you a headache. It’s not that big a deal to rebuild your processes, so go ahead and clear it.
Secondly, thin wall behavior isn’t on by default. Edit the settings under the Advanced tab in the Advanced settings (confusing, I know) that I’ve pointed out in black below.
Lastly, the setting that I’m pointing to in Red, Allow Perimeter Overlap %, you want to increase that if you’re accustomed to walls and details that are less than 0.8mm thick not disappearing. Technically, a 0.4mm nozzle shouldn’t be able to do anything smaller than a 0.8mm thick wall. However, most slicers overcome this by letting the lines overlap each other, to allow for details as small as 0.6mm. However this comes at a cost of accuracy since the walls will squish together. For me that’s not a big deal. Apparently for the S3D guys that is unacceptable.
The problem is that if you’re printing parts with high detail and you suddenly don’t see the details you’re accustomed to you may assume S3D can’t do those details, but other slicers do, so you’ll switch over to the other slicer, when there’s no need. It’s just a simple setting that needs to be adjusted.
There you go. Simplify3D 4.0 Awesome stuff.
Apologizes for the video quality at the start of this video. I had OBS still set for my streaming setup so the resolution was lower. During editing I realized this, but needed to get this out so I didn’t do a full recording, but then I realize I forgot the thin wall stuff, so I also went back and fixed the resolution and added that section. Again, here at 3DPP LLC, Jankey is the word.
