Bed Slingers are a bad idea and need to be stopped

In the early days of 3D printing a simple idea would simplify the design and enable easier and cheaper making. Not to mention saving on shipping. But as 3D printing as grown it seems bed slingers has become a bad idea that needs to be thrown off a cliff.

A little behind the scenes trivial for you. When doing the first toss the 3D printer didn’t actually go that far, nor did it roll down the hill the way you see it in the final video. When we went down to get the printer we had to climb up the hill a little ways, for which I brought my fleet footed son. But when he got there I thought “Hey, throw that down the rest of the way and I’ll film it down here” and it really delivered with a satisfying roll.

Many of the screws for the bed had long since fallen off even before filming started, which made it’s apparent destruction more appealing.

The glass bed, however, was removed so that the mess would be easier to clean up.

The printer was, technically, functional before the toss. And with some effort it might have been repairable. But it came to my possession because no one wanted it. It was, in fact, a 3D printer I let someone else just have outright, that they returned to me because they upgraded to a better printer. There’s always someone who says “you should find someone who will use it”, but  there was literally no one in my area who would, and there was no point in shipping it to someone else. In the end destroying it and making a funny 3D printer to advocate for change in 3D printers was probably the best case scenario for this machine.

And, it was a good excuse to get eyes on PrintAQuest. Sorry for that little interruption in before the toss.
