I had the chance to talk to Wayne Losey about the shutdown of shapeways after editing this video. Turns out he didn’t invent Stickfas, but he did lead the design and development of it and followed up with a kid focused line called Xevoz before moving on to Modibot. He also said that while Shapeways shutting down was a bit concerning, he hasn’t really been focusing much on shapeways in recent years. They were an important part of his bulk business, but not a loss he won’t recover from.
But in a way I’m glad that this happened myself. Because Wayne is a toy industry alum with more than 30 years in it, and this gave me an excuse to reach out to him. Hopefully I can get some mentorship on turning my dream of being a toy designer into a reality.
Originally I was going to release this video mostly raw. No edits, no cuts, no title cards or images. But I thought better of that. But that’s why this video is released mid day on Saturday and not on Thursday.
I generated the image in that thumbnail with Bing image generation. Not sure it’s high contrast enough for a thumbnail, but we’ll see how it does.
