Ankermake really tried to do something new with the M5C. And while that could have gone very badly, or very well, it ended up… not bad. Not great, but not bad. I had a good time with it. But there’s enough little problems with it that it doesn’t merit a recommendation. Had they stuck with designing that 6 color changer, it could have been a contender.
I recorded this before getting the news that they had given up on their 6 color changer. So I had to hastily edit the stinger at the end.
The thing is, Ankermake itself is a company that I had a few false starts with. In the past when they reached out to me, they didn’t want to send me a 3D printer until I agreed to let them have editorial control over the video that was produced.
When they eventually decided to trust their machine and let me make my video without interference, it seems it was too late. Had I been able to make this video 6 months ago, perhaps things could have been different. Or maybe their 6 color changer was doomed from the start. Who knows?
But would I have made this video back then? I’ll be honest, I kind of wanted to reward them for trusting me. I wanted them to think “Oh, that wasn’t so bad. What were we worried about?” So I went a little easy on this video. Truth to tell, their software taking over my STLs had me tempted to roast them like a pig on a spit.
But, again, I can’t deny the printer does work. Warts and all.
