Is IDEX worth it? Do you want multi-material 3D printing? Video

Some videos just go smooth. Turn on the camera, record, edit, done. This was not one of those videos. I don’t know what it was, but I could not get the vibe of it. Hopefully I was able to fix that in post, though.

Testing out a slight change in the lighting of this one. A little back light, changing the main light so it’s not blasting things out. Also, I put some of my blinkies in the background, and what it made me realize is… I need more blinkies in the background. And bigger ones.

While in this video I made the point that Tool Changers are still a ways out, it may also be closer than we think. I’ve been seeing DIY solutions for years now, and E3D has a $2000+ kit you can buy right now, which is actually a ludicrously affordable price for something that they’re putting out there and supporting. But it’s still a kit, it requires a lot of work on your part, and there’s a lot of development that needs doing on this front. (Not that I would say “no” if they offered me one.)

The point is, as much as I truly think that Tool Changers are the next step in home automated making, but it’s still got a lot of challenges to overcome. Heck, even IDEX, if you’re not using FlashForge’s solutions, can still be a bit fiddly. So while Tool Changers are coming, and I’m looking forward to it, I don’t think IDEX needs to be afraid just yet.

Besides, by the time Tool Changers do mature, there will almost certainly be something else on the horizon that will make you think “maybe I should wait”. You should never wait. If now is the time, then now is the time. That’s what I say.
