Meta Chess with the Flashforge Creator Max 2 Review

Watch Video

The Creator Max 2. Like I said in the video, its price is creeping up there, but justifying it along the way. The lack of wifi is a sticking point for me, but what it’s ultimately capable of is inspiring.

Here’s an example. I’m working on 3D printing some utensils, like forks and spoons, and to get the right balance between the classic utensil shape and layer adhesion, I decided they needed to print vertically, but at a 30 degree angle to to increase layer surface area. That means where it stuck to the build plate was just the very end of the handle. Printing this on the Kywoo3D was… okay, but as they got taller and thinner the prints got wigglier and messier. The Kywood is a bed slinger, as is so many other printers, and this means the print is wiggling all over the place. I tried slowing the prints down, adding a zhop, and printing them one at a time, and that helped some, but the fork still came out crappy. But then I throw them at the Creator Max 2, even printing the fork and spoon at the same time, and they both printed flawlessly the first time. So clean you can eat off them. Which is exactly what I plan to do.

Meta Chess is a project that I’ve been fiddling with for, more or less, for 8 years, because it was one of the many chess variations I designed as part of the contest where I ultimately won my first 3D printer. The current rules, what amounts to a mech battle in a chess world, was only stumbled upon after several false starts. The final version is actually playable and can be a lot of fun.

While the bumper was made in association with this particular printer, Metachess doesn’t need a fancy printer. There’s long been a single color version (made in TinkerCad), and you can even take the multicolor version and just assign both colors to the same color, if you like that design. Everyone can play MetaChess. Assuming you have a basic understanding of how chess is played first.

I’ve been making efforts lately to put a well edited opening into my videos. It’s the idea of hitting people with the coolest part first. There’s was the exchange between Cymon and I in the LK1 review, the glitch inspired coverup in my “10 ways 3D Printer Manufacturers fail” and in the first seconds of my mega popular “Don’t buy the popular 3d printers” video I made a fake video streaming page that I don’t think enough people looked at the suggested videos on.

Look at the suggested videos. LOOK AT THEM!

The first minute of this weeks video involved a lot of shots, a lot of audio sweetening and tweaking, and the creation of 4 unique Meta Chess decorated logos which I present to you here:

I was a bit worried that the first one might have people thinking this was “Metal Chess”. Then I realized that would be awesome, so I just went with it. Hopefully the other variations corrected that. Overall, I’m really proud of the bumper I made. Hopefully now people will get the idea behind Meta Chess and I won’t be the only one playing it any more. Just me. By myself. Story mode Meta Chess.
