I know a lot of people during this unusual time who are frustrated that they’re not making the progress they thought they would be with this time. They’ve felt for a long time that if they could only shed their day job they’d be able to write that novel or make that thing they always wanted and they’ve be complete and happy, and instead they’re struggling to find the time to do anything. Maybe their kids are taking a larger percentage of their time than they thought, or, maybe if they don’t have kids, the overwhelming pressure they’re putting on themselves results in them being too mentally exhausted to do anything. Whatever the situation, if you’re finding that your ambition isn’t being met by your reality, I want  you to take this advice:

Relax.

I know in the movies Superman discovers that he’s from another planet, and then in the next breath he’s got the suit and the full suite of powers, and he’s saving the world. But this ain’t the movies. This is more like an episodic show, like smallville. Today it’s drama with the kids, and a little cutaway on the side to something you’re working on. Tomorrow it’s drama with the groceries, and a little aside of something new you’ve learned. A new problem here, a new solution there. The goal isn’t instant success. It’s progress. Slow gains. Even in these times.

And when life and work and the world spins back up to the way it was, more or less, those gains don’t need to stop. They may slow down, but they don’t need to stop.

You got this.
