Cleaning 3D Printing VOCs from the air with the Enviroklenz

Apparently my previous video about 3D printing and VOCs got the attention of the people at Enviroklenz. I had thought, at the time, that VOCs were unfilterable. That’s the common knowledge at any rate. But apparently you can filter them if you just give them lots and lots of filter to have to go through. And the Enviroklenz filters are no slouch in the lots and lots department.

Building this air quality sensor was a fun project, and one that I kinda want to keep working on. Because I have some ideas for it. First of all, I want to swap out the neopixel ring for a pair of LEDs, one red, one green. When red and green light mixes it makes yellow. Then, I want to build a case for it that looks like a canary. maybe a chibi canary. Maybe I’ll take Adrian Bowyer’s challenege and try to print the circuit board in conductive filament weaving through the body, a 3D circuit board, impossible without 3D printing. Put a difuser in the head so that the eyes shine green or red depending on the state of the air, and have myself an air sensing canary.

Of course the conclusion I reached, that the VOCs from 3D printing are much less than I expected, could be better backed up if I had a better air sensor. At the time when I was looking for them, I found the real expensive ones. But when I did a search for the video I had to skew the results by showing the most expenisve first because all of a sudden there are $150 air quality sensors available. Still a little steep, especially for just one video, but much more reasonable than the ones I was looking for at the time. I may just get one of those, if this video gets enough people commenting on it that I didn’t do a good enough job gathering data with my hacked together solution.

You may have noticed that my videos lately have been a little bit slack. I’ve been busy. But this video got a little extra effort, as I feel reviews should get. Footage was edited in that I’ve been gathering during the build and air quality tests. It got a proper outro and color correction. This is classic 3D Printing Professor.
